Welsh actor, singer, song-writer and all-round cool guy Elliot Pritchard spends some time with Ont’ Sofa in The Youtube Space for a heart-felt and lung-emptying performance. Honest, building and energetic, Pritchard exudes his genuine and unadulterated desire to entertain, and does just this.
With a style intent on being ‘true, honest, uncomplicated and natural’, it’s easy to see where his musical influences come into play, holding a love of all things ‘not overworked, not overthought’. Clean guitar chords, exposed high notes and softly accented lyrics feature.
Lilting between rhythmic control and impassioned vibrato, Pritchard’s voice takes hold of the room and demands anyone present to be a part of the performance. In doing so, he succeeds in bringing to life the straightforward desire for his music to ‘be simply relatable. I just want people to be able to connect with them on a personal level. I think in life we all go through some very similar situations, it’s just the context that changes.’
Discussing the revealing nature of his song-writing, he admits that ‘it’s easier to write about things than it is to talk about them, so my songs are a nice release for me.’ Within the non-judgmental performance space, Pritchard truly does come to life and is able to speak out without inhibition. The result: evangelising our emotions. He stretches out to us with the self-professed autobiographical lyrics ‘I look up high and then it rains on me, and I want to see above the things in life that we cannot perceive and I do believe in love.’
Although he exercises multiple talents, Pritchard has written music since he picked up a guitar, aged 12, and has continued to play daily ever since. A constant appetite to be heard has helped propel his ideas and, as a result, has his unrelenting drive to thank for the accomplished nature of his songs. ‘I’ve always enjoyed performing, whether that be on a stage or in a classroom or nowadays at work, something that isn’t entirely recommendable... I think creativity is fundamental in anyone’s life, but in mine I think it certainly helps both consciously and unconsciously.’
As one of the many artists that recognises the probability of ‘making it’ in the big wide world of the music industry, he notes that ‘first impressions are really, really important,
which I think is fair (because there’s so many of us) but unfortunate because some music, and I think everyone would agree, grows on you. A lot of artists aren’t really given the opportunity, so I’d say that’s the unfortunate part of trying to get that break.’
He has an answer to this, emphasising the importance of ‘persevering’, both literally in his lyrics and attitude towards the process of making music: ‘for me this is really simple, I’ll just keep going, believing and learning. I read a quote somewhere saying you can essentially fail at something you don’t want to do so why not ask the world for what you really want to do? This sums up my standpoint perfectly, you’ve got to persevere, which is exactly what the song I recorded with Ont' Sofa is about.’
He reflects on the performance as a whole, noting very kindly the relevance of the session against his firm-standing ideals. ‘I had a really great time and the facilities were amazing, the guys were so easy to work with. Ont’ Sofa’s phrase ‘standing up for real music’ couldn’t be more accurate, what they’re offering is something completely invaluable to up-and-coming artists in an industry that’s only getting harder to break into.’
As for things to look out for in the future, his answer is as modest and aspirational as his performance. ‘I’ve got a gig booked on the 11th February at The Belford, Balham. It’s a free event so it’s really worth coming down to check out the other acts playing as well as myself. Also, I’m putting some more focus on my acting this year so maybe a West End debut is on the cards?’
